The process of transfering a Firearm to a NJ FFL

How to use an FFL in NJ:

Procedures for Transferring a Firearm (Inbound):

Before purchasing your firearm from a dealer, you should contact the FFL you plan to use for the tranfer of the Firearm. They will ask you for the contact info from you seller and the type of firearm you are purchasing. Once you agree to use him or her they will handle the rest. Allot of FFL's already have there license on file with many popular online gun sellers.

After you purchase firearm it will ship directly to the FFL you have chosen, You FFL should contact you and arrange a time for you to visit there location and transfer the firearm into your possesion.

Dont be surprised when you arrive at your FFL if the package is opened, This is required becuase the FFL must log your firearm into his inventory as per ATF rules. He or She will also inspect your firearm to verify the make and model and legality in your state or city. If the firearm you purchased is what shipped then this is usually not an issue. Most issues arise from magazine capacity, NJ has a 15 round capacity for rifles, Many rifles come with larger capacities, If this is the case your FFL will transfer the rifle but will not be able to allow you to take posession of the magazine, Some will swap them out for you.

Transfer Process:

To transfer a firearm into your custody it requires a small amount of paperwork and a background check (NJ NICS) for each firearm you have purchased, The total time is approximately 10 - 15 minutes from start to finish for each Firearm.

When you arrive to pick up your new firearm you will need the following information:

Valid NJ Firearms ID Card, Valid Government issued photo ID and If you purchased a Handgun they will need your Handgun Permit

( That State of New Jersey has a 1 Handgun per 30 days rule, If you purchased multiple handguns please bring your NJ exemption. If you do not have this form i will be happy to store your handguns for you and release them each 30 days without any storage fees)

Transfer Cost

Transfer costs vary from FFL to FFL, Its common practice in NJ for an FFL to charge between $25.00 - $35.00 + the Cost of the background check ($15.00 in New Jersey, Paid to the state)

So your average Firearm will cost you a total of $40.00 - $50.00 Plus tax for each firearm. Some FFL's will offer dicounts for multiple tranfers at the same time.
